Your experience with your grandson reminds me of my own childhood experiences in my hometown's only (and white-dominated) school system. As kids, we were propagandized from kindergarten through the last day of high school. We were told over and over and over how "great" this country is; how young George Washington "could not tell a lie" about that cherry tree; how Lincoln "freed the slaves," etc., etc. ad nauseum.

But! My entire extended family attended a what today would be called a "woke" Baptist church, where every Sunday in Sunday school we were not merely taught about Jesus and God and the Holy Spirit; but about how we as a people "got over" -- what so many of our elders in the church had to overcome in the South just to get us kids here.

Back then, it was "Negro History Week" when we children put on plays and read poems about black heros/sheros of the past and present. But, again, that teaching was not reserved for just one week in February, but every single Sunday God sent us.

With "elders" like you and your husband guiding him, I'm betting that your grandson is going to be all right

Well done, as usual....and thanks for the shout out.
