You are right. I should have said that Wallace was exhibiting the future white supremacist signal. But..."literary license" as an "opinion writer" allows such interpretations,

I am 74-years-old. As a teenager, I actually watched (via TV) Wallace do his thing. l vividly remember the '63 bombings of black churches in Alabama, including the murder of those three little black girls who were my age. As a result, Birmingham became known as "Bombingham."

But, if my description of George Wallace as a progenitor of this now widespread signal of white supremacy is the only thing that bothers you about this piece....well...you may need to check your own "privilege."
