Yep. I tried writing for them for a couple of months a couple of years ago. Just as you say, no matter how "popular" or lucrative my efforts had been elsewhere (Medium, Allvoices, etc.), the most I got from Vocal was a few cents, if that, for any one piece. I stopped sending them anything. You are right. It's nothing but an elaborate scam.
