This is why I cringe whenever I hear folk (mainly “white) who clutch their pearls and wring their hands as they tearfully claim that “this is not who we are” after every mass shooting, killer cop acquittal, the racist reveals of politicians or just plain folk you thought you “knew” on social media, in your own office, or the latest Trump outrage.

On the contrary, given its blood-soaked, sordid history, this is exactly who (and what) America is. And if Trump is any kind of indicator, “things” will not be changing any time soon.
