Putin Orders Nuclear Forces on ‘High Alert’
All of the talk and theorizing about whether Putin’s invasion of Ukraine signals the beginning of World War III just got real.
It is being widely reported that President Vladimir Putin has placed his military’s nuclear “deterrent” forces on heightened alert status as the world holds its collective breath and watches Russia’s four-day-old invasion of Ukraine expand and encircle its major cities.
Putin made his pronouncement in a meeting of top officials today, Sunday, February 27. He spoke during yet another press conference and argued that this move was in response to NATO’s “aggressive statements” and ever-tightening of all manner of sanctions against Russia.
Russia, of course, harbors perhaps the world’s second-largest arsenal of nuclear weapons, second only to the US. In any case, together with the US, untold thousands of nuclear warheads on land, sea and air have stood poised to essentially destroy all life on this planet since at least the early 1950s.
