I’ve read accounts of how slaves were often worked so hard and for so long that their muscles separated from their bones — tendons and ligaments snapped because of overuse.

Or how about aged or sick slaves who were simply left to die on the side of the road, or actually died in the fields and were usually buried in quick-dug, shallow graves on the side of the road. There were even slaves whose primary job was to dispose of the dead.
