It’s called a “zero-sum” proposition. For most white people, true “equality” means “loss” of their privileged and preferred and heretofore dominating status and situation in every meaningful aspect of life. If blacks “win” at anything, most whites believe that that must mean that whites “lose” everything.

Why is this? The late Dr. Margaret Burroughs, founder of Chicago’s DuSable Museum of African American History, once explained to me that there are still millions upon millions of white people who simply do not believe that black people are human.
