Interesting (and entertaining) piece.
Like many people, I came to writing first through poetry in college a whole lifetime ago. I quit when I had to go forth into the real world and actually earn a living.
But one day, I got angry at something in a Chicago newspaper. I responded with a “Letter to the Editor.”
But instead of my scribbling appearing there, they featured it as an actual column with a byline and this descriptor: “Herbert Dyer is a freelance writer based in Chicago” — something I did not even know, had never thought about, but I sure liked seeing my name and my words in print for the whole damn world to see!
Thus, they created a monster which I’ve been trying to tame ever since.
Great piece. Thanks.
