Before Columbus bumped into the Bahamas, "race" referred to one's "nationality" --i.e., the Irish "race," the English "race," the German "race,", etc. You're right that it was then (after 1492) that the first uses of "race" by Europeans began to distinguish them from everybody else in the world who had at least some measure of "color" in their skin.
